In this reading exercise, students read many words containing  <er>, <ir>, <ur>, <wor>, <ear> (e.g. “her”, “first”, “surf”, “world” and “early”). For efficiency and engagement, we find it best to work on extended code targets like <er>, <ir>, <ur>, <wor>, <ear> while also working on reading fluency (accuracy, speed and expression) with sentences and short passages.

This reading workout is about the son of an Earl, Sir Bertie, who has to – gasp – actually work for a living.
